Creating a VPN
(Virtual Private Networking)
For Windows 2000/XP Users
A VPN connection is used to make a tunnel across a public internet to a private intranet. It is similar to creating a dial-up connection in Windows 2K/XP. The information required to make the initial connection is a username/password/domain name, and the host name of the server allowing access to the network. Once connected, the client can function is if it was attached to the local network.
1. Open Control Panel (Start > Settings > Control Panel or Start > Control Panel)
2. Double-click Network Connections icon
3. Select Create New Connection
<
or File > New Connection
4. Click Next on the opening screen and on the following screen select "Connect to the network at my workplace"
5. Select "Virtual Private Network connection"
6. Enter Company Name to Identify the connection
7. If you have already configured a dial-up connection to the internet, and wish this connection be dialed automatically if not already connected when you try to access the vpn, the connections name will appear, select "Automatically dial this initial connection:" and then the connection name from the list(does not work for AOL users or Netzero users). If you have high speed internet or manually dial the intial connection the internet, select "Do not dial the initial connection" most users should select this option.
8. Enter host name of vpn server(provided by an Administrator)
9.Select "My use only"
10. Finish Wizard, Add Shortcut to Desktop?
11. Open the connection. If selected to create a desktop shortcut, a new icon will appear on the desktop with the company name, or in Start > Control Panel > Network Connections the icon will appear there also, double click on it.
12. Click Properties on the window that opens.
13. Select the tab Options, and make sure that Include Windows logon domain is selected.
14. Select the Networking tab, click over Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) so it is selected and click on properties.
15. Click on the Advanced button
16.Clear the checkbox for "Use Default gateway on remote network"
Press OK
Press OK
Press OK
17. You should now be able to enter username/password/domain into the prompt.
18. Click Connect.
To access shares on the remote network over the connection, manual entry of network names is required. For example: To access a share called company on a server called myserver01, you would click Start > Run and enter \\myserver01\company.
