Creating a VPN

(Virtual Private Networking) 

For Windows 98/ME users 

Windows 98 Machines you to use your network username/password on your local machine.

1. Open Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network

2. Make sure Client for Microsoft Networks is installed and the Primary Network Logon is set to Client for Microsoft Networks. If true goto step 3.

2b: If not Click Add, select

2c. When the machine restarts, enter your username and password provided

3. Click Logoff, enter your username and password provided

4. Open Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network

5. Click Add.

6. Select Adapter and click Add.

7. Select Microsoft under Manufactures and Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter under Network Adapters.

Click OK

8. System Settings Change Reboot, click yes.

9. When the system comes back online, enter your supplied username/password into the prompt(you may click cancel if you do not wish to use the VPN).

10. Make sure the Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter and the NDISWAN protocol for it is installed. (this is found by right-clicking > properties on Network Neighborhood on the desktop or selecting network from the control panel pallet)

 11. Open My Computer and open Dial-UP Networking. 

12. Double click Make New Connection.

13. Enter a name for your connection(preferably your company name for identification clarity) and select Microsoft VPN Adapter.

14. Enter the VPN server hostname for this connection

15. Click Finish

16. In the Dial-up networking folder right click on the connection you just created and select properties.

17. Make sure hostname is identical to one supplied and click on the server types tab.

18. Correct the settings on the window to match the options below, then click TCP/IP settings.

19. Be sure to remove the check in front of Use default gateway on remote network.

20. Open Dial-up Networking under My Computer, double-click the connection you just created. A prompt will appear. Enter the username/password supplied and the if need to the host name of the vpn server supplied. And press connect.

21. During the Intial connection you maybe prompted again for username/password/domain. Enter your supplied username/password and the company domain name. To access shares on the remote network over the connection, manual entry of network names is required. For example: To access a share called company on a server called myserver01, you would click Start > Run and enter \\myserver\company. Remember: If you haven't logged into the machine when it starts up with the supplied username/password, you will encounter a password prompt when you try and access shares on the file server. There is no workaround for this on Windows 98/ME.
